Dec-27-2007 :: 9 in the Box

After winning 5 straight and working their way back to respectability, the Vikings lose to the Redskins on a night where they could have clinched a playoff spot.

With the loss they have to beat the Broncos and they need the Cowboys to defeat the Redskins in a game that means nothing to the Cowboys. The Cowboys will probably rest their starters.

Tavaris Jackson, regressed to his old ways in the game after having put together some decent games during the win streak. If you ask me, the return of Adrian Peterson has hurt the progress of Tavaris. I think that when Peterson was out, Tavaris took command of the offense and seemed comfortable in that leadership role. With Peterson back he seems to have the attitude of this is the Adrian Peterson show and I need to take a back seat. He's shown that he's not too comfortable in that role.

The Redskins were loading the line of scrimmage, daring Tavaris to throw the ball and it just killed the offense. Tavaris needs to know that, while it is the Adrian Peterson show, he's the quarterback. He's the leader of the offense.

Don't get me wrong it's been a great season, but, it's probably over at this point. Cross your fingers Viking fans. The Vikes need a lot of luck to make the playoffs.

Oct-22-2007 :: Pathetic!

Is there anything more frightening than Brad Childress with a playbook? Well, there is actually; Tavaris Jackson dropping back to pass.

Case in point vs Dallas. On our first drive they hand the rock to Adrian Peterson and he marches us down the field and eventually scores on a 20 yard scamper off left tackle.

Our next two possessions were 3 and outs. The number of Adrian Peterson touches in those drives? ZERO. Dallas then pins us on our own 1 yard line. A very precarious situation. My thinking? We better get some yards or we'll be handing Dallas some great field position if we have to punt. Do we give the ball to Adrian Peterson? Nope. We have Tavaris chuck the ball to sure handed Troy Williamson (AKA butterfingers Williamson).

Are you f-ing kidding me Brad? We're trying to win some games here. Where are your brains?

Finally in the fourth quarter the Vikings give the ball to Adrian Peterson again. Finally we start to drive down the field. Peterson breaks off a nice 16 yard run to get us down into field goal range. First and ten; Brad, you decide to then take Adrian Peterson out of the game? WTF are you doing? Oh look the drive stalled. No f-ing way? Really? What a surprise. We attempt to kick a filed goal which then gets blocked and returned for the game winning TD.

Is it me? Am I just that smart? I don't think it's that hard. Get the ball to Adrian Peterson; PERIOD!!!

Somebody please get this guy an offensive coordinator. Brad Childress is killing me. KILLING ME!

Oct-15-2007 :: The Chosen One

Adrian Peterson rolls over the Bears in route to a 34-31 Vikings victory in Soldier Field.

What a game. What talent at RB. Minnesota is on their way. Not this year, maybe not next year, but in the near future we will be the dominate team in the NFC.

Adrian Peterson set a Vikings single game record with 224 yards rushing in the game. The surprising thing about it though is that he didn't lead the team in carries. Chester Taylor is still starting and still getting more opportunities than Peterson.

Don't get me wrong, Taylor is an excellent back; top 10 in the league maybe. Can you imagine how many yards Peterson would have had if he had carried the rock 25-30 times in the game?

The guy is amazing. He's the second best back in the game today (Ladanian Tomlinson still must be considered #1), but by next year he'll be the #1.

Their are two things keeping the Vikings from being a great team this year. Quarterback play and play calling.

Tavaris Jackson is not an accurate passer. His passes are all over the place. Watching him miss open receivers is hard on the soul. This is only his second season and he should get better, but, it's hard to see it in his game today.

Please, please, please, Brad Childress, hire an offensive coordinator. The play calling during the Bears game was horrible, but, it was his best effort to date. The Vikings seriously need a guy in the pressbox who has nothing to think about except for what is going on offensively. It's too much Brad. You need an offensive coordinator.

Apr-29-2007 :: Vikings Get Peterson; Pass on Quinn

The Vikings had pick #7 in the NFL draft yesterday. Two of my wish list players remained on the board when pick #7 was on the clock; QB Brady Quinn and RB Adrian Peterson. Brady Quinn was my #1 wish list player and in my opinion the type of player you can build a team around. The Vikings, however, passed on Quinn and decided to go with Peterson.

My emotions are mixed on this because, while I really wanted Adrian Peterson, I REALLY wanted Brady Quinn. I guess the Vikings management thought that they were covered at QB with Tavaris Jackson and Brooks Boliinger. An opinion that I vehemently disagree with, because, while I think Tavaris is going to be a good player, Brady Quinn is going to be a franchise player. A player that will be the face of his team, if not the league, for the next 10 to 15 years.

Adrian Peterson is going to be the best RB in the NFC in the next couple of years so I'm really happy that we have him. If you are going to make a mistake and pass on Quinn then you should at least get a player that is as good as an Adrian Peterson. Now the Dolphins passed on Brady Quinn and got Tedd Ginn, JR. Now that's the type of mistake that haunts your franchise for the next 10-15 years. It's like the Blazers passing on Michael Jordan for Sam Bowie. The Rockets passed on Jordan but at least they got Akeem Olajuwon, so they are not remembered as being num-skulls like the Trailblazers.

First round grade: A-

On to the rest of the first day picks.

Round #2 the Vikings select WR Sydney Rice from South Carolina.

The Vikings actually traded back with Atlanta and picked up a 4th round pick. The only problem is, Atlanta picked one of the best corner backs in the draft with our pick, in Chris Houston from Arkansas. Not that we needed a CB as badly as we need WR but that guy is going to be great.

Troy Williamson went to South Carolina and has been a bust for us so far. Sydney Rice has been a productive WR and is about the same size as Randy Moss was. He looks to be a sure handed receiver and is a good addition to the Vikings team.

As far as team need goes this was a great pick when you factor in the extra 4th round pick we got in the deal.

Second round grade: A-

Round #3 the Vikings select CB Marcus McCauley from Fresno State.

McCauley has size and speed and is a good fit for us. It's tough for me to see him as a starter in the near future because the Vikings have two good CBs in Cedric Griffin and Antoine Winfield. McCauley is a talent however and a steal in the third round. He'll be a nickel back in the foreseeable future and then eventually fill a starting roll.

The Vikings real need on defense is a pass rusher so I would have liked to see one picked here. But looking at the draft, the only defensive end that they passed on was Charles Johnson for Georgia. I like Johnson but McCauley is a better player.

Third round grade: A

Brad Childress and his staff have done a fantastic job the past two drafts. I highly anticipate day 2 picks where the Vikings have two forth rounders. We need to fill needs on OL and a pass rusher.
I would like to see DE Brian Robinson from Texas or DE Baraka Atkins from Miami added to the roster by the end of round 5 or maybe Jacob Ford by the end of round 6.

Mar-31-2007 :: Vikings Dead in Free Agency

Much has been said about the Vikings lack of movement this year in free agency. The team came into the year with needs at WR, DE, OL and QB.

They signed a WR named Bobby Wade from the Titans, but many say they dropped the ball by not signing a bigger named player like Kevin Curtis from the Rams. I don't agree. Kevin Curtis was probably the best receiver available in free agency this year, but, he's not a #1 receiver in my opinion. He's at best a #2 and probably just a really good #3. The Eagles gave this guy a 6 year 32 million dollar contract. I am less upset over the fact that they didn't get Kevin Curtis than I would be if they gave that guy 32 million dollars.

Defensive Ends were not much better. There was Patrick Kerney, who I wanted the Vikings to draft back in 1999, but Dennis Green selected Dimitrius Underwood instead. Kerney is coming off a serious injury but I believe he's a potential pro-bowl Defensive End. I would have loved to see the Vikings pursue him. He signed with the Seahawks for 6 years 39.5 million with 19.5 million guaranteed. Again, this is an over-spendature on the part of the team that signed him. I totally see how the Vikings would rather take their chances in this draft with the amount of Defensive End talent available in this year's draft. They should be able to land a solid DE in day one of the draft. Why sacrifice your salary cap future when you may not have to.

David Carr is available as a veteran QB who the Vikings have a shot at landing, but, there is a good chance that Brady Quinn will be available at pick #7 eliminating the need at QB.

This year's free agency class has bee weak in my opinion and with the way teams have been over-spending on talent, it's best that the Vikings have steered clear, in my opinion.
